Ultimate is a sport of big moments – the long downfield huck, the layout goal, the end zone sky and the list goes on. Over the past four years of Major League Ultimate, those moments have been captured by our partners at UltiPhotos. In our series, Caught in Action, we will look at some of the great moments from MLU’s history and how they have been captured by the talented photographers at Ultiphotos.com. This week, we take a look at a moment captured by Bob Hume.
The 2016 New York Rumble earned a reputation for engineering strong finishes and impressive 4th quarters. The most memorable of these was during their Week 3 matchup with the Washington D.C. Current. Down 15-11 heading into the 4th quarter, the Rumble were in need of a historic comeback and on a team full of rookies, it fell to two veterans to kick things off.
About half way through the final quarter, New York had just scored to close the deficit to 3 goals. Electing to burn a timeout and pull from mid-field, the Rumble pinned D.C. deep in the back of their own endzone. Following a fantastic handblock by Matt Weintraub, the Rumble recieved the disc right outside the endzone. Weintraub, the team’s assist leader in 2016, check the disc in before delivery a beautiful scoober to a cutting Scott Xu for the score.
As Xu made his move and brought in the score, Hume captured the moment forever.
With the Current’s lead cut to two goals, and the momentum quickly shifting towards the underdog Rumble, New York was able to outscore D.C. 10-4 in the final quarter and complete one of the most impressive comebacks in MLU history (BOXSCORE – WATCH GAME)
