New York announced Friday their 26-man roster for the 2014 Rumble season.
After getting a look at players over two rigorous tryout sessions earlier in the month, the Rumble have finalized their roster for the 2014 season.
The final roster features many familiar faces, including 2013 MLU Eastern Conference MVP Chris Mazur, Dan Heijmen, Ben Faust, Robbie Gillies and Jonathan Cox, along with several exciting new additions to the team including Sean Murray and rookies Isaac Saul, Jack Marsh and David Vuckovich.
“This year we were looking for athletic, high intensity players to deepen our roster and give us that extra edge on defense,” said General Manager Michelle Kondracki. “The new rules were made for us, and I think we’ll show that as early as our first game against Boston.”
Despite only returning half of the roster from last year’s team, the new additions will more than fill the void, providing the Rumble with a championship caliber squad.
“The new faces on the roster are perfect replacements for some of the quality athletes we lost due to moving and injuries,” said Head Coach Anthony Nuñez. “This is a championship roster and we can go far this year just based on the depth that we have.”
In total, the Rumble have added 13 new players to the team on top of the 13 players returning from the 2013 roster. Second year players like Chris Mazur, Ben Faust, Dan Heijmen and Robbie Gillies will look to lead the way for the future stars of the Rumble, including rookie Isaac Saul.
“We have a nice set of groundwork for offensive and defensive structure that allows for players to be creative in their own right,” said Chris Mazur. “After a few practices and a game to fully understand the rules, you’re going to see some of our rookies exploiting the field size in an exciting way.”
After losing to the D.C. Current in the last game of the season and failing to make the playoffs, the Rumble will look to bounce back this year with their sights set on the MLU Championship.
“We thrive, not when we are dwelling about missed opportunity, but when we are embracing the excitement of what’s to come,” said returning player Ben Faust.
Even though the Rumble lost the league’s top defensive player from 2013 in Rob Baker, the Rumble will look to some new faces to play strong team defense, combined with an exciting, high-octane offense.
“We are going to be a steady offense who will be anchored by our top returners and new faces in David Vuckovich and Isaac Saul,” said Nuñez. “I expect us to continue to play some strong, hard-nosed defense that will make our team tough to play against.”
The Rumble will kick off their season on April 12 as they visit the defending MLU champion Boston Whitecaps on the road. The Rumble will play their home opener at Union City High School the following week on April 19 against the Philadelphia Spinners.
