New York announced Tuesday the signing of four rookies to the 2014 Rumble squad – Adrian Banerji, Quinn Hunziker, Matt Hennessy and Matt Wilson.
All four players impressed Head Coach Anthony Nuñez, General Manager Michelle Kondracki and the player committee that evaluated players after the first open tryout on February 22.
Banerji, Hunziker, Hennessy and Wilson are versatile cutters, and Coach Nuñez will have the luxury of being able to slot-in players on both offense and defense. While all four players are MLU rookies, each brings experience and a championship pedigree.
“Signing Hunziker and Wilson is something special for me as a coach, having coached them both when they were players in high school,” said Nuñez.
Adrian Banerji (Tufts University/Lincoln, Mass.) will be an exciting addition to the team, having played with Bodhi and Ironside the last five years. He was also a member of the U23 Mixed Team USA, the world champions in 2013.
“I am still looking for a national championship and excited to be a part of this new chapter in the history of Ultimate,” said Banerji.
Matt Hennessy (Wake Forest University/Chicago, Ill.) joins Banerji as a player who brings vast club experience. Hennessy has played at the USAU National Championships the past four years, playing with LA Metro, 7 Figures and PoNY, where he was a teammate to several Rumble players.
“Above all, it’s not just chemistry but also knowing the players and their work ethics and not wanting to just play with them as much as for them,” said Hennessy.
While Hunziker and Wilson do not have the pedigree of Banerji and Hennessy, they each still bring championship experience to the Rumble.
Quinn Hunziker (Yardley, Pa.) previously won the 2010 YCC Youth Championship with DEVYL, where he played under Coach Nuñez.
“Playing under Nuñez is always great as he knows a lot about the game and I’ve been learning from him since my first high school tournament,” said Hunziker.
A pure athlete, Matt Wilson (Temple University/Levittown, Pa.) will join the Rumble as versatile player who will add talent to the offensive and defensive lines, both as a handler and a cutter. Wilson previously played on club teams Roots of Rhythm and the Trenton Takers and also won the USAU Pennsylvania High School Championship with Pennsbury High School in 2008 and 2009.
“With the increased field size, I believe I can generate great separation from my defenders as well as have more space to throw to,” said Wilson.
The Rumble will announce their full roster in the coming week. Tickets for the 2014 season are available now on the Rumble TicketLeap page.
