The Rumble announced on Thursday their first signings of the 2015 season, welcoming back 11 players from the 2014 roster.
The Rumble have solidified the core of their 2015 roster, signing 11 players to contracts from the 2014 roster. Returners suiting up for the Rumble this year include Joe Anderson, Robbie Gillies, Ben Faust, Quinn Hunziker, Marques Brownlee, David Vukovich, Jibran Mieser, Sean Murray, Mike Hennessy, Jake Herman and Brenton Hard.
Anderson, Faust, Gillies and Herman are all returning for their third year and are the only four players who have been members of the Rumble since the inaugural season in 2013.
The group includes a number of big name players such as 2014 All-Eastern Conference Team players Joe Anderson (5 goals, 6 assists, 9 defensive plays), Marques Brownlee (4 goals, 2 assists, 11 defensive plays), Quinn Hunziker (6 goals, 2 assists, 9 defensive plays) and David Vuckovich (15 goals, 11 assists, 5 defensive plays). Defensive leaders Joe Anderson, Marques Brownlee and Quinn Hunziker were all named to the 2014 MLU All-Eastern Conference First Team Defense while David Vukovich was named to the 2014 MLU All-Eastern Conference Second Team Offense.
Jibran Mieser, who was named to the U-23 Team USA National Team that will compete in this year’s U-23 Ultimate Championships in London, will look to play a big role on the defense again this year. After signing with the team mid-season in 2014, he immediately made an impact, winning the Week 11 Spikeball Defensive Play of the week.
Mike Hennessy and Jake Herman round out the roster on the offensive side of the disc, while the team will once again look to Sean Murray and Brenton Hard to match up against opponent’s top offensive players.
After being picked to do well in the Eastern Conference last year due to having what was thought to be a strong roster, injuries and other uncontrollable factors played a role, resulting in a poor season. However, the coaching staff and players look to bounce back this year through this core group of players.
“Injuries were a big part of our problem as a team last year and these players were able to fight through all the uncontrollables,” said Head Coach Anthony Nuñez.
Third year player Robbie Gillies echoed Coach Nuñez’s sentiment. “We had a tough year last season but the talent was always there,” said Gillies.
“I’m confident that another year with much of the same roster and some great additions will allow us to challenge any of the other Eastern Conference teams.”
Never at a loss for words, third-year player Jake Herman is just excited to get back on the field with the team.
“I love tossin’ the plastic with my dudes — high-release flippers, Tasmanian two steps, sidearm give-and-gos — it’s all good,” said Herman.
“I think we’ll win the whole shebang. We don’t put on the short shorts for anything less.”
Look for the Rumble to make additional signing announcements in the coming week.
