Meet Robbie Gillies, cutting specialist, a nightmare to defend and one of the Rumble’s most dangerous deep receivers.

Robbie started playing Ultimate with his brother in middle school. No shoes, no boundaries, and no stall count, a humble introduction to Ultimate, yet one shared by many players. All that time to cut along a blank canvas may have shaped him into the player he is today.

It wasn’t until college that Robbie had to adhere to the rules and make those cuts count. Fortunately, he quickly developed into one of the most outstanding players on the field. During his four years, he spent two years as captain and was invited to play on the 2004 Metro East All-Region Team.

After college, Robbie reached Nationals with the Condors in 2007 and 2008 and with PoNY in 2010. As a player and the workout specialist for PoNY, Robbie will lead the team to Nationals once again for a chance to take it all.

Right now though, Robbie is focused on his professional career with the Rumble. “I’m extremely excited about MLU and the upcoming season,” says Gillies. “Ultimate has come a long way over the past decade and this is just the latest big step towards growing the sport. Not only is the MLU well-organized but its community outreach is fantastic. I’m just happy to be a part of this organization.”

Former PoNY teammate Ben Faust is excited to be joining the field again with Robbie. “He’s super consistent,” says Faust. “He understands his skill set, which is focused on making perfectly timed cuts, and uses it to keep the offense moving systematically and defenders on their heels.”

Speed, versatility and discipline seem to be the defining characteristics of this Rumble squad. They need it against a stacked Eastern Conference.

Check out Robbie and the rest of the Rumble take on the Philadelphia Spinners in a Preseason Showcase Game in Randolph, NJ on April 6.
